Bid to build 189 homes at Barry's White Farm

7:30am Thursday 11th March 2010

PROPOSALS to build almost 200 houses on White Farm in Barry have been submitted to the Vale Council for consideration.

Persimmon Homes East Wales last month submitted plans for 189 residential units on the 6.03 hectare site which, with 31.3 dwellings per hectare, they claim is compatible with other residential densities in the area.

They propose building a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom properties designed to appeal to first-time buyers as well as existing homeowners.

Some 20 per cent of the proposed homes are set to fall into the ‘affordable’ category.

But opponents of the scheme claim the proposed development is too dense, and will lead to further traffic congestion in the Colcot Road area of the town.

Others believe the development could prove a potential flood risk.

Vale Council operational manager (development control) Marcus Goldsworthy said the application was currently subject to consultation, and no date had yet been fixed for the matter to be presented to the planning committee.

He added: "The site is not situated in an Environment Agency-identified flood zone although the Agency is one of the organisations who are being asked to comment."

Site notices will be posted, and direct neighbour notification letters were sent out last month to 268 households in the immediate vicinity.

Consultations are also being undertaken with relevant statutory and other bodies.
