YSGOL Gwaun y Nant pupils have celebrated the 90th anniversary of the youth organisation Urdd Gobaith Cymru.

Pupils from the Welsh-medium school marked the occasion by holding a party, playing games, folk dancing and eating birthday cake.

Headteacher Rhydian Lloyd said: "We were very proud to be part of the Urdd’s 90th birthday celebrations, and felt it was important that we mark the occasion in school."

More than 200 parties were held across Wales last Friday (January 27) to celebrate the anniversary.

The Urdd is a youth organisation that organises a range of activities across Wales. It was established in 1922 to give children and young people the chance to learn and socialise through the medium of Welsh.

"It’s fantastic for children of all ages," added Mr Lloyd.

"As a school we participate in many of the activities such as sports tournaments, swimming galas, cookery competitions and Eisteddfodau, as well as organising an annual residential trip for our Year 6 pupils to the Urdd camp at Llangranog."

Ysgol Gwaun y Nant also has family links to the organistion, as pupils Becca and Mali are the great-granddaughters of Syr Ifan ab Owen Edwards who established the Urdd in 1922, while his granddaughter is a member of staff.

"I was a member of the Urdd when I was a child and have fond memories of participating in the Urdd’s many activities," added Mr Lloyd.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet other children from across Wales.

"You don’t have to be a Welsh speaker to take part, but it’s an opportunity to learn the language."
