DO YOU remember, or were you involved, in the summer arts school that took place in Barry during the 1960s and 70s?
If so, the Vale Council wants to hear from you.
The Council’s Arts Development officer is working with the community to re-create a project all about the Barry Summer Arts School.
The project was the idea of a partnership between the National Eisteddfod of Wales and the Eisteddfod Voluntary Visual Arts Group, and is supported by the Arts Council of Wales and the Vale Council.
The main event will take place during July and August and will feature an arts exhibition at Art Central gallery in Barry Town Hall, linked with the National Eisteddfod taking place in the summer.
Residents and visitors will be able to take part in a range of multi-arts workshops in Welsh and English, including a mixture of visual, performing arts and literature workshops.
Tracey Harding, Vale Council Arts Development Officer, said: “We hope to create an exhibition showing original art works together with stories and memories of the summer school.
"The exhibition and summer school will require extensive research but we are sure it will be one of the most exciting exhibitions held in the gallery and will be of great interest to the local community."
There is little documented about the summer school which was led by its founders Lesley Moore, Artist and Vice-Principal and Wyndham Heycock, co-director between 1962-1973.
The original school saw pioneering new approaches to art and education. It attracted iconic artists from all over the world such as Tom Hudson, George Brecht, Robin Page, John Epstein, Roland Miller, Jazz musician Larry Adler and today’s Royal Academy Artist Terry Setch, who each shared their experience and taught at the school.
If you were a student, a tutor or someone who helped organise the original workshops then the council would love to hear your stories, see your photographs, art works, paintings, film recordings, jewellery designs or anything that would have been part of and created at the summer arts school.
