Vale Council plans to insall money-saving antenna on Barry Library

AN APPLICATION to install a money-saving antenna on the roof of the listed Barry Library building has been lodged by the Vale Council.

The council will use the antenna to connect its offices and save a quarter of a million pounds.

The proposed installation is for one 200mm squared communications antenna pole on the library roof. A single data cable will be laid on the roof in a rubber sheath and then clipped to the wall up until the point of entry into the building.

The dish and pole will be painted light grey for minimal impact to the roofline.

The antenna is intended to be set well back from the edge of the roof so will only be visible from a distance. A Vale Council spokeswoman said the installation would be painted to blend in with the surroundings.

She said: "This is part of a contract that has been awarded following a tender process to provide a new Wide Area Network (WAN) that connects 82 of our buildings electronically, to allow the exchange of e-mails, documents, internet access and access to corporate computer systems.

"As this is a wireless network, antennae need to be located on all buildings that are connected to the Council.

"By implementing this new network the Council will increase the bandwidth and network speed available to staff and save the Council around £250,000 a year over the current network."
