St Richard Gwyn pupils win top prize at national quiz

ST RICHARD Gwyn School bagged a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 Notebook and a mobile phone as prizes, after winning a Crime and Safety national quiz.

The final round took place in the Copthorne Hotel, near Cardiff, on Thursday, February 9, and was relayed by live feed on the internet through the website www.brfm.co.uk

The four teams competing for the national trophy were the successful regional winners from each of the Welsh police force areas: St Richard Gwyn representing South Wales; Sant John Lloyd Secondary Catholic School, Carmarthenshire, representing Dyfed Powys; Chepstow Comprehensive School representing Gwent; and St Brigids School, Denbigh, representing North Wales.

Each of the teams comprised of five year 8 pupils, who have devoted considerable time and effort in learning information about the three main themes of the Core Programme which are 'Drug and Substance Misuse', 'Social Behaviour and Community' and 'Personal Safety'.

During the All Wales School Core Programme quiz, hosted by Kevin Johns from Swansea Sound Radio, the teams answered questions on drugs and substances, antisocial behaviour, arson reduction, personal safety, road safety, health issues, ages in law and were also tested on their powers of observation.

Carmel Napier, the Chief Constable of Gwent Police presented all the participants with a plaque and certificate.

As an extra surprise and thank you for all the pupils' hard work they were presented with a mobile phone from Airwaves Solutions and the winning school received a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 Notebook with software and a case from G4S Group 4 Securicor.

As an extra treat the next day, the teams were taken to Ely Fire Station and Techniquest, before travelling back to their home areas.
