Sully Sports FC sit on top of Senior League
8:10am Thursday 2nd February 2012
TONYREFAIL GBC 1 SULLY SPORTS FC 2
SULLY Sports travelled to Tynybryn Park in Tonyrefail for this game, knowing that a win could take them top of the South Wales Senior League Division One.
Tonyrefail are fighting relegation, but have had some very good games against the league's top rated teams Sully's plan was to rest some first team regulars and give a chance to the lads who had been close to selection from a strong squad.
All looked good to start with on a very soft pitch, but after creating numerous chances, Sports' play became scrappy with some poor passes and wrong decisions.
Mike Fowler was creating the best moves and he should have put Sully ahead after beating two players in the box, only to bend his shot wide.
But it was Fowler who eventually broke the deadlock, taking a centre from Gareth Hemmens and powerfully heading into the net.
Mark Brown was injured when going for a 50/50 ball, and was replaced by Daniel Brown making his debut for Sully.
The second half saw Sully again making more chances as they pushed for a second goal. Sports' defence had so far dealt with all the home side had to offer, but there was still the same poor play creeping in.
The home team started to push for the equaliser but the Sully defence was coping well, and the second goal for Sports came when the exellent Fowler produced a fine pass for Calvin McClaggon, who shot into the corner of the net.
For the striker it proved to be a crazy couple of minutes, as he received a red card soon after for a challenge on the home keeper.
The 10 men were visibly deflated after a long injury break, and had to reorganise as they were pushed back by Tonyrefail.
Sully survived a call for a penalty and held out for the points with a display they will want to forget quickly.
As the players were in the dressing room, news came through that the leaders had lost so Sports were top of the league, and the lads were challenged to keep the wining run going.
It was also announced that Jimmy Blackie had been named South Wales Senior League Manager of the Month for December and January, with 10 straight wins. Congratulations to all concered.
