Resounding victory for Barry RFC U14s

7:40am Thursday 2nd February 2012

Barry RFC U14s 41 ST JOSEPH'S U14s 17

ON THE back of a convincing 57-0 away victory against Beddau the previous weekend, the U14s were hoping for another ‘W’ last Sunday against St Joseph’s from Cardiff.

The home side started with grit and determination and some excellent work from the forwards allowed No 8, Scott Griffith, to cross for Barry’s first try under the posts which was slotted by winger Ben Morgan-Brownhill.

Not be outdone, flyer Callum Mickelsen, whose try count this season has gone through the roof, soon got the backs on the scoresheet with the first of his four tries in the opening half.

Barry were rampant, and tenacious work from the forwards kept serving up decent quick ball for the backs to cross the gain line. By taking advantage of some weak tackling from the visitors Barry piled on the points and were soon more than 30 points ahead.

It looked likely that the spectators wouldn’t get to see a second half and the prospect of notching up more than 50 points in the first half looked a real possibility.

However, St Joes started to expose some weaknesses in the Barry defence and by kicking the ball over the home-team’s heads soon had Barry back-pedaling and scrambling in defence.

Having clawed back a converted try, which was duly cancelled out by a try by Captain Cameron Gibbon, the visitors showed that they wanted to give Barry a game. But with the half finishing at 36-7 it looked as if St Joe’s had left it too late.

The second half started with the visitors continuing to pile pressure on Barry who made a number of changes at the interval. Focusing on attacking Barry’s back line, St Joe’s started to give the home team a fair few problems with some intelligent kicking which put pressure on the Barry defence.

St Joe’s ran in two well deserved tries in the second half and Barry’s first half try fest was not repeated but winger Morgan Wheeler crossed the whitewash to give Barry a 41-17 victory.

With the quarter final draw for the Blues Cup looming, Barry are going to have to up their game if they want to progress against stiffer opposition.

All credit to the visitors who could have capitulated early on but then fought back and exposed weaknesses in defence that the coaching team are going to have to iron out during this week’s training sessions.

Barry tries: Cameron Gibbon, Scott Griffith, Callum Mickelsen (4), Morgan Wheeler Barry Conversions: Ben Morgan-Brownhill (3).
