Deserved win for Barry U16s

7:40am Thursday 16th February 2012

ON A CHILLY morning last Sunday, Barry U16s played host in a friendly match against Caldicot at the Reservoir Fields in Barry. Both teams were up for the challenge and looking forward to a good match between two strong and evenly matched sides.

Both sets of forwards were getting to grips with each other and recycling the ball well before unleashing their backs. After 10 minutes the first try came when Tom Adams ran along the touchline to score in the right hand corner to give Barry the lead. After a further 5 minutes, Barry's Liam Beavis broke through Caldicot's defence to score his first try for the team. Caldicot came back with their first try because of a lapse in defence from Barry, which was successfully converted.

Barry fought back and in the last few minutes of the first half some good drives and lines allowed Tom Adams to gather the ball and score his second try under the posts. The first half finished 17-7.

The second half started well with both teams working hard with some good handling and defence. Barry scored another try through Emyr Byrne who took advantage of the other team's lack of defence.

Barry were growing in confidence but Caldicot never gave up and pushed hard to capitalise on Barry's mistake, and went on to score a second try which was also converted.

Barry made a couple of changes and within a minute of coming on to the pitch Taylor Harris scored his first try for the team.

The game opened up and with good handing, rucking, individuals runs, team work and defence by Barry, further tries were scored by Rhys Burnett, Tom Adams to score his third try of the match, Taylor Harris and Eymr Byrne to score their second tries of the match. All Barry's conversions were taken by Jack Smith who successfully converted 7 of the 9 tries.

It was a well disciplined game and both sides played with passion. A very exciting and fast game with good support from both sets of supporters. The game finally ended 59-14 to Barry.

Barry U16s also won their last match away to Taff Wells by 47-12.

Barry U16s' next game will be on Sunday, Febuary 19, also at home at the Reservoir Fields against Llandaff.
